Generational has announced it’s bringing its battery health tech to all of Motorpoint’s UK dealerships and preparation sites. The move follows successful trials across the used car retailer’s network.

Motorpoint tested the technology on 1,500 used electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles across its 21 UK locations. The results showed strong battery performance across the board.

The retailer’s stock returned an average battery health percentage of 96.6%. Nearly all vehicles – 97% – achieved a State of Health score above 90%.

More than a third of tested vehicles scored above 99% battery health.

Generational’s data shows used EVs with battery health certificates sell one week faster than those without. Certified vehicles moved in 43.1 days compared to 50.4 days for uncertified stock.

How Battery Health Checks Work

Battery health checks examine a battery’s usable capacity against its original new condition. They provide buyers with real-world range expectations and can spot potential battery pack issues.

The process uses a compact device attached to the vehicle’s on-board diagnostics port. The device extracts battery health data and analyzes it against manufacturer standards and Generational’s EV database.

Each check takes just minutes to complete.

Motorpoint will now only sell EVs with battery health ratings of ‘very good’ or higher. The policy aims to encourage drivers switching from petrol and diesel vehicles.

“Battery health is fast becoming the new mileage in the EV era. Buyers want clarity and confidence, and our technology enables industry-leading retailers like Motorpoint to deliver that in minutes,” said Generational CEO Oliver Philpott.

He added that the results prove transparency drives both customer confidence and business performance.

Chris Ainsworth, head of preparation at Motorpoint, said the partnership addresses growing consumer needs as more drivers consider electric vehicles.

“With more motorists making the move to electric, we wanted to give car buyers the reassurance they’re looking for when opting for a battery-powered vehicle. Generational’s testing solution offers accurate, transparent and data-driven battery health information that’s easy for customers to understand – which ultimately helps them buy with confidence.”

The rollout represents a significant step in standardizing battery health data across the UK’s used EV market. As electric vehicle adoption increases, battery condition transparency becomes increasingly important for both dealers and buyers.
