MG has unveiled its 2025 MG4 EV in China ahead of the global launch later this year.
The redesigned hatchback features a softer look inspired by the Cyberster roadster and hybrid MG3, while offering larger dimensions and reduced weight compared to its predecessor.
This new model replaces the original MG4 that launched in 2022 and quickly gained popularity for its affordable price point and practical size.
The 2025 version stretches approximately 10cm longer than the outgoing model, with a 4.5cm increase in wheelbase. This positions it closer to the soon-to-retire MG5, potentially suggesting it will replace both vehicles in MG’s lineup, sitting below the upcoming MGS5 SUV. The dimensional changes may result in a price increase from the current £26,995 starting point.
MG has abandoned the angular shark-nosed styling of the current MG4 for a more rounded approach. The front end appears less aggressive while the rear features smaller arrow-shaped tail lights connected by a full-width light bar across the tailgate. The black door cladding has been removed, creating a more cohesive overall appearance.
While MG hasn’t released complete technical specifications, Chinese ministry of industry filings reveal homologation models using a 161bhp motor – slightly less powerful than the current entry-level version. However, the new model weighs just 1,415kg – a substantial 240kg reduction – suggesting performance and range should remain competitive.
Battery details remain unconfirmed. The current MG4 utilizes 51kWh, 64kWh, and 77kWh LFP batteries delivering ranges between 218 and 323 miles. The new model will likely match or improve these figures.
Additional powertrain options are expected to replace the current 201bhp and 242bhp variants.
Whether a replacement for the high-performance 429bhp MG4 XPower is planned remains unclear.
The 2025 MG4 is anticipated to arrive in UK showrooms during the second half of the year, where it will compete with models ranging from high-specification Renault 5s to the Renault Megane, Cupra Born, and Citroen E-C4.
