BYD announced the launch of its all-electric Seal 07 saloon, targeting luxury competitors like the BMW i5 and upcoming Lexus ES. The Chinese automaker revealed the EV alongside its Sealion 06 SUV at a company event.

The Seal 07 EV comes in two trim levels with identical powertrains. Both versions use a 69kWh battery pack that delivers up to 438 miles of range on China’s CLTC testing cycle.

BYD positioned the Seal 07 EV as a direct challenge to established premium sedans.

The styling closely follows the existing Seal 07 DM-i hybrid model. The EV features a smooth front fascia, narrow LED headlights, and a trapezoidal grille similar to BYD’s Tesla Model 3 competitor, the standard Seal.

At 4.9 meters long, 1.9 meters wide, and 1.5 meters tall, the Seal 07 sits firmly in the mid-size sedan category. A rear-mounted electric motor produces 326 horsepower.

Starting at 169,900 Chinese yuan – roughly £18,500 – the Seal 07 significantly undercuts its German and Japanese rivals.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the Seal 07 EV shares its cabin design with the hybrid version. The dashboard features a two-spoke steering wheel and fully digital instrument cluster, while BYD’s rotating infotainment display takes center stage.

The center console includes wireless charging pads, cupholders, and a rotary control dial. Physical buttons handle climate and vehicle functions – a design element BYD also used in its Atto 2 crossover.

BYD confirmed the Seal 07 will include its upgraded “God’s Eye” 5.0 AI-driven autonomous system when sales begin later this year. The system represents BYD’s latest advancement in self-driving technology.

Sealion 06 SUV Launch

BYD also unveiled the Sealion 06 EV, which replaces the outgoing Sealion 05 SUV. Priced from 159,900 yuan – approximately £17,400 – the SUV delivers 441 miles of CLTC-rated range.

While God’s Eye autonomous driving remains optional on the Sealion 06, the SUV includes BYD’s DiSus-C intelligent suspension system as standard. The vehicle also features a high-speed tire blowout stabilization system that operates at speeds up to 87 mph.

Both models use BYD’s second-generation Blade battery technology.

Charging Technology

The new vehicles showcase BYD’s latest charging capabilities. According to company specifications, both the Seal 07 and Sealion 06 can charge from 10% to 97% capacity in nine minutes using BYD’s flash-charging infrastructure.

BYD’s megawatt chargers deliver up to 1,000kW of power – equivalent to 1.2 miles per second of charging, or 250 miles in approximately five minutes.

Bono Ge, BYD’s UK chief, announced plans to install 300 megawatt chargers across the UK this year. The infrastructure will support the launch of BYD’s premium Denza brand in the British market.

However, BYD hasn’t confirmed whether the Seal 07 or Sealion 06 will be available in the UK market. The company continues expanding its European presence as it challenges established automakers in the premium EV segment.
