New Electric Vauxhall Astra Confirmed by 2030 Could Be an SUV image

Vauxhall-Opel has confirmed plans for an all-new, all-electric Astra arriving by the decade’s end – but the company won’t say if it’ll keep the traditional hatchback shape.

The electric Astra will launch around 2029 or 2030 using parent company Stellantis’ new STLA One platform. This flexible foundation supports both electric-only and hybrid powertrains.

It’s the same platform that’ll underpin Alfa Romeo’s upcoming Giulietta hatchback and Peugeot’s expected E-309.

Four New Models Coming

The electric Vauxhall Astra will be one of four new Opel-Vauxhall models hitting the market. The lineup includes a next-generation Corsa, a new SUV developed with Leapmotor, and a Mokka replacement.

An estate version – called ‘Sports Tourer’ – will definitely continue. That body style remains popular in Opel’s home market of Germany.

But the traditional hatchback? That’s less certain.

Florian Huettl, Vauxhall-Opel CEO, hinted the new Astra could transform into a C-segment SUV instead. He’s responding to changing customer preferences that favor SUVs over traditional hatchbacks.

This would mark a first in the Astra’s 43-year history. Since its 1980 debut, every generation has offered a hatchback option.

The potential change mirrors Ford’s strategy. The Blue Oval plans to bring back the Focus – the Astra’s longtime rival – as a crossover in coming years.

“Whenever we look at what the next generation of a well-established car such as the Astra should be, looking at the evolution of the segment is a big deall of our work,” Huettl told UK media. “The hatchback segment continues to decrease. We see a lot of flow to other segments, namely the SUV bodystyles. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the new Astra is a traditional hatchback.”

Multiple Powertrain Options

The upcoming Astra won’t be electric-only. Vauxhall-Opel plans to offer mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants alongside the fully-electric version.

This multi-powertrain approach gives buyers flexibility as the automotive industry transitions to electrification.

Production will happen at Opel’s Rüsselsheim factory in Germany. Stellantis is investing €1 billion in the facility as part of a broader expansion that includes a new Vauxhall-Opel headquarters in the Rhein-Main region and a components facility in Kaiserslautern.

The current Astra received a facelift for 2026 and starts at £27,495 regardless of powertrain choice.
