Kia is developing a small city car called the EV1 to compete with the upcoming Renault Twingo electric vehicle, according to industry reports.

The EV1 will sit below the EV2 in Kia’s electric-only lineup. Pricing is expected to start just above £20,000 when it launches next year.

The new model essentially serves as an electric version of Kia’s smallest current car, the Picanto. The A-segment EV1 will be sold globally but targets European markets where demand for electric city cars continues growing.

Kia will likely develop the EV1 alongside sister brand Hyundai. European production is being considered.

The company already builds the EV4 hatchback at its AutoLand facility in Žilina, Slovakia. That decision aimed to meet European expectations for refinement, handling, and build quality.

Design and Features

Kia hasn’t released official images yet. The EV1 is expected to introduce new design elements inside and out while matching the compact four-meter footprint of its French competitor.

Current Kia EVs earn praise for build quality, battery efficiency, and reliability. However, critics point to the similar triple-screen cabin layout across the entire EV range.

The EV1 may feature a simplified, value-focused interior to compete with the Twingo and upcoming Volkswagen ID. Lupo.

Performance Variants

Kia has confirmed plans for GT performance versions across its EV lineup. An EV1 GT remains possible.

A performance variant would likely use a single front motor with modest power increases. This differs from the twin-motor, all-wheel-drive setup in the EV4 GT and the 641bhp EV6 GT.

The company will share more EV1 details as development progresses.
