Nio confirmed that right-hand drive versions of its all-electric Firefly hatchback have entered production, setting the stage for a 2026 UK debut. The compact EV represents Nio’s direct challenge to established players like the Renault 5 and Mini Electric in the competitive small electric car segment.
The Firefly first launched in April with left-hand drive versions already available across several European markets, including the Netherlands where pricing starts at €29,900 (£25,533).
Nio has already slashed the Firefly’s starting price by 18% in Norway as part of its ‘Pre-Christmas Offer.’ The promotional pricing brings the hatchback down to 229,900 Norwegian kroner – roughly £17,108.
Right-hand drive models have begun sales in Singapore, with Australia joining the UK for 2026 market entry. Nio hasn’t released UK pricing details yet.
Performance and Range
The Firefly uses a 41kWh LFP battery pack that delivers an estimated 205 miles of WLTP range. That positions it competitively against rivals – the Renault 5 with its 40kWh battery manages 190 miles, while the Mini Electric’s 37kWh unit provides up to 180 miles per charge.
Nio’s rear-wheel-drive setup supports the company’s battery swapping technology, though it’s unclear whether UK customers will access this feature. Rolling out battery swap functionality would require Nio to build an entirely new network of swap stations across Britain.
Tech and Interior Features
The Firefly comes loaded with premium features typically found in higher-priced vehicles.
Standard equipment includes a 14-speaker sound system, air-cooled 50W wireless phone charging, and 256 different ambient lighting options. The hatchback also offers 3.5kW vehicle-to-load capability – meaning it can power external devices and appliances.
Boot space measures 404 litres, expanding to 1,253 litres with the 60:40 rear seats folded down. Nio adds a 92-litre front trunk that the company claims matches best-in-class storage capacity.
The sustainable interior features either vegan leather or fabric upholstery options. A unique front bench seat comes standard and slides side-to-side, making it easier to exit in tight parking spaces.
The Firefly represents a key component of Nio’s aggressive expansion strategy, with the Chinese automaker targeting at least seven new markets for 2026 entry.
