Nissan will launch a small electric vehicle based on the Renault Twingo, suggesting both models might be available in right-hand drive for UK customers.
The announcement comes as part of the new strategic partnership between Renault Group and Nissan, designed to help the Japanese manufacturer recover from recent financial struggles and its unsuccessful merger attempt with Honda.
Nissan’s version will use Renault’s AmpR Small EV platform (called CMF-BEV at Nissan) – the same architecture that underpins the Renault 5. The company hasn’t released any additional technical specifications yet.
The production approach for this Twingo-based model will follow the same pattern as the upcoming Nissan Micra and Juke crossover. Both vehicles share underpinnings with the Renault 5 but will be manufactured at Nissan’s Sunderland plant when they launch in 2026 as electric-only models.
This strategy supports Nissan’s efforts to reduce development time and costs while bringing new vehicles to market faster.
The new Micra EV will begin production in late 2025.
“Renault Group has a strong interest in seeing Nissan turnaround its performance as quickly as possible,” said Renault Group CEO, Luca de Meo. “This agreement, beneficial for both parties, is the proof of the agile and efficient mindset of the new Alliance. It also confirms the attractiveness of our products with the Twingo.”
Nissan CEO and president Ivan Espinosa added: “Nissan is committed to preserving the value and benefits of our strategic partnership within the Alliance while implementing turnaround measures to enhance efficiencies.
“Our goal is to create a more agile and effective business model that allows us to respond quickly to changing market conditions and conserve cash for future investments.”
Renault’s electric vehicle lineup has gained positive consumer response since the company’s shift toward electrification. Beyond the Renault 5, both the Megane E-Tech and Scenic have won multiple awards.
