Octopus Energy has partnered with Chinese EV manufacturer BYD to launch the UK’s first “Power Pack Bundle” – a vehicle-to-grid package that could eliminate home charging costs and transform electric cars into household energy assets.

The bundle, announced at Octopus’s Energy Tech Summit in London, combines a leased BYD Dolphin electric car with a bi-directional Zaptec Pro home charger and smart tariff access. The complete package will cost under £300 monthly when it launches later this year.

Vehicle-to-grid technology allows EVs to charge during low-demand periods and sell electricity back to the grid during peak hours. This two-way energy flow helps balance grid demand and reduces fossil fuel dependency.

Octopus estimates drivers could save £620 annually compared to standard EV charging costs – and nearly £1,000 versus petrol vehicles.

“This is a game-changer for both drivers and the energy system,” said Greg Jackson, founder of Octopus Energy. “By using the spare capacity in car batteries to support the grid, we can give drivers free charging and reduce the cost of renewable energy for everyone. It’s the future of transport and energy, rolled into one.”

The system runs on Octopus’s Kraken platform, which automatically manages charging and discharging based on real-time grid signals and energy pricing. Drivers plug in overnight and wake up with a fully charged car – and no charging bill.

The BYD Dolphin’s integrated bi-directional capability eliminates the need for bulky first-generation V2G chargers that previously limited technology adoption.

Motability Operations, the UK’s largest vehicle leasing company for disabled people, has joined the partnership to expand access to the technology.

“This partnership means more affordable electric driving for disabled people and turns EVs into energy assets that support the grid and cut household energy bills,” said Andrew Miller, chief executive of Motability Operations.

Stella Li, executive vice president of BYD, emphasized the broader potential: “This is about unlocking the full potential of EVs – not just as transportation, but as active participants in a smarter, more resilient energy ecosystem.”

Growing V2G Market

Global interest in vehicle-to-grid technology continues to accelerate. Industry experts believe widespread adoption could create hundreds of thousands of mobile power stations that provide grid flexibility as renewable energy generation expands.

The Power Pack Bundle will be available later in 2025 through Octopus Electric Vehicles – the company’s EV leasing division that’s become the UK’s largest EV-only leasing business since launching in 2021.

Drivers can register interest now through the platform.

The partnership represents another step in Octopus’s strategy to reshape UK energy consumption and storage – positioning electric vehicles as energy assets rather than just transportation.
