Ohme Cuts EV Home Charging Costs 67% With Dynamic Tariffs

Ohme announced that electric vehicle home charging costs can drop by more than two-thirds following the new Standard Variable Tariff for electricity.

The Standard Variable Tariff for electricity fell from 27p per-kilowatt hour to 25.73p/kWh. But drivers using an Ohme smart charger with dynamic EV-friendly tariffs like Intelligent Octopus Go or E.ON Next Drive can reduce home charging costs to 7p/kWh and 6.7p/kWh respectively.

A Volkswagen ID.5 with a 77kWh battery costs £5.39 to charge from empty to full using Intelligent Octopus Go – that’s 344 miles of range.

The same charge costs £19.82 on the Standard Variable Tariff.

Drivers covering 6,800 miles annually will pay £437.41 for home charging on the SVT. Switching to Intelligent Octopus Go cuts that cost to £119 per year.

Both options remain cheaper than petrol or diesel cars, which cost over £1,000 annually to run.

David Watson, Ohme’s CEO, said charging at home offers the most affordable option for EV drivers.

“This lower electricity price is great news to help them reduce their running costs. However, any EV driver charging at home should look at switching to one of the wide range of energy tariffs that drop those costs still further.”

Ohme serves as the official charger supplier for Volkswagen Group, Mercedes Benz, Volvo Cars, Smart, and Hyundai in the UK.

Money-Saving Options

Research earlier this year identified several ways motorists can save on EV charging costs. Switching to an EV tariff and using dynamic charging ranked as the top money-saving strategies.

Other alternatives include:

  • Solar energy systems
  • Off-peak charging schedules
  • Charge Point Operator subscriptions

E.ON Home Drive currently offers the UK’s cheapest home charging tariff at 6.7p/kWh during overnight hours.

The cost savings become more significant as electricity prices fluctuate throughout the day – smart chargers automatically schedule charging during the cheapest periods available.
