Peugeot announced it will launch the E-208 GTi this year, marking the brand’s entry into electric performance hatchbacks. The company positions the new model as a spiritual successor to the legendary 205 GTi.
The automaker says the E-208 GTi continues the GTi philosophy by adapting performance for the electric age.
Performance and Powertrain
The E-208 GTi shares its platform with the Abarth 600e and Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce. It delivers 276 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque through a single front-mounted motor – double the output of the original 205 GTi.
Peugeot claims the electric hot hatch will accelerate from 0-62 mph in 5.7 seconds. That’s 0.2 seconds quicker than the larger Abarth and ahead of competitors like the Alpine A290 and Mini John Cooper Works.
The performance package includes a mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential and rear anti-roll bar. Peugeot fitted bespoke suspension, steering, and braking components, including 355mm discs with four-piston calipers.
Engineers lowered the E-208 GTi by 30mm compared to the standard car. The track widened by 56mm at the front and 27mm at the rear to improve handling dynamics.
Range and Battery
The E-208 GTi retains the same 54kWh battery pack as other E-208 variants. Peugeot estimates 217 miles of range for this highest-performance version, though real-world driving will likely yield 160-170 miles.
Design and Styling
Peugeot’s design team created what they call a subtly sporty appearance that builds on the standard hatchback’s sharp styling. The approach differs from the related Abarth, avoiding oversized spoilers or prominent logos.
The body kit features a deeper grille area with “claw mark” LED accents and flared wheel arches covering the widened track. A larger rear spoiler balances with a low-key black diffuser.
New 18-inch alloy wheels carry large GTi lettering that references the Speedline design from the 205 GTi. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires provide grip.
Neon Red highlights on the wheel arches, grille, and spoiler echo the red lettering from original GTi badges. The interior continues this theme with bright red floor mats like the 205, plus red dashboard trim and seatbelts.
Sports seats combine leather and Alcantara materials. The rear panel features vertical divisions with an Alcantara section and mesh panel that recalls the 205’s fabric upholstery.
Availability and Pricing
Peugeot hasn’t announced E-208 GTi pricing or specific sale dates. Based on the regular E-208’s £30,000-£34,000 range and the Abarth’s £37,000-£40,000 pricing, the Peugeot will likely land just under the £40,000 mark.
The model should reach showrooms later this year.
