Polestar introduces battery health certificates for used electric cars
Polestar will begin providing battery health certificates for secondhand Polestar 2 models starting in April. The Swedish EV manufacturer’s new certificate will display the remaining usable battery capacity as a percentage.
This battery health report complements the standard 112-point inspection already performed on all pre-owned Polestar vehicles.
Battery longevity remains a concern for potential EV buyers – particularly in the used market – despite positive findings from recent surveys. Polestar states the new service “gives customers peace of mind that their battery is in peak health and reassurance that many more miles of hassle-free motoring is ahead of them.”
The previous Labour government had expressed intentions to implement a standardized battery health check for used EVs. Industry voices have recently urged the government to fulfill this commitment to strengthen consumer confidence.
Several organizations have already developed their own battery assessment services for the secondhand EV market, including trade auctioneer BCA and startup Generational.
Polestar has also announced additional incentives for pre-owned customers through April, including a free Zaptec home charger and reduced interest rates.
The company will open its first dedicated pre-owned retail location in Birmingham this May. This standalone site will focus exclusively on used Polestar vehicles, operating independently from the main Polestar Space in Erdington.
“As more pre-owned Polestars start to come on the market, it offers a lower price entry-point to join the Polestar family and experience our performance EVs with all the software features of our new cars,” said Matt Galvin, managing director of Polestar UK.
“And where customers may have been apprehensive about a five-year-old Polestar 2 and its battery condition, once again Polestar is giving car buyers transparency and providing peace of mind in the same way we do with our climate impact,” Galvin added.
