Polestar officially unveiled the Polestar 5 at the Munich motor show, positioning its new flagship as a direct competitor to the Porsche Taycan and Lotus Emeya. The Swedish performance brand’s four-door grand tourer delivers up to 871bhp and offers a 416-mile range.

The production model stays remarkably close to the 2020 Precept concept that previewed it. Polestar configured the 5 as a “4+1-seat” fastback that’s now on sale with pricing between £89,500 and £142,900.

Design and Aerodynamics

The five-meter-long fastback prioritizes aerodynamic efficiency throughout its design. Polestar’s signature “dual blade” headlights use Pixel LED technology and flank a low front end that integrates the Smart Zone housing for ADAS sensors.

Engineers used double-wishbone front suspension to keep the bonnet and wing lines low. The doors feature shading that makes the car appear even lower than its actual profile.

The production car mirrors the Precept concept almost exactly in profile. The only practical concession involves using regular rear doors instead of the concept’s coach-hinged units. The sharp Kamm-style tail design carries over unchanged, with the full-width rear light bar doubling as a rear wing.

Like the Polestar 4, the 5 eliminates the rear window entirely. The extended rear head structure creates more interior space. A digital camera and rear-view mirror system replaces traditional rear glass, while a 2m by 1.25m panoramic sunroof tops the cabin.

Interior Configuration

Polestar markets the 5 as a five-seater but clearly designed it for four occupants. The outer rear seats match the front seats for comfort levels.

Every Polestar 5 includes four-zone climate control with heating, ventilation, and massage functions for the front and outer rear seats. The rear seats recline individually, and the battery design incorporates “foot garages” to maximize rear passenger legroom.

The driver faces a nine-inch instrument cluster mounted on the steering column, supplemented by a head-up display. A 14.5-inch main touchscreen dominates the dashboard and responds to a rotary dial on the center console. The console also features a PIN-controlled lockable compartment that replaces a traditional glovebox.

Buyers can select standard MicroTech fabric upholstery or optional Bridge of Weir Nappa leather produced according to Polestar’s sustainability standards.

Sustainability Focus

The Polestar 5 continues the brand’s environmental commitment through material choices. It uses recycled plastic materials for carpets and headliner components, matching other Polestar models. The bonded-aluminum platform incorporates 13% recycled aluminum.

Natural fibers play a larger role in this model. The seat backs feature a flax-based finish, while lower door sections use natural fibers with finishing that showcases the material’s natural structure.

Performance and Powertrain

The 5 represents Polestar’s first model built on its proprietary architecture, using in-house developed motors. The dual-motor setup targets Taycan GTS performance levels.

The standard Dual Motor edition accelerates from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds. The Dual Motor Performance cuts that time to 3.2 seconds – supercar territory. Both variants top out at 155mph.

Standard models generate 737bhp and 599lb ft of torque. The Performance variant increases front motor output for a total of 871bhp and 749lb ft. Both versions use four-piston Brembo brakes with 400mm two-piece discs that save 12kg compared to the Polestar 3’s system.

The Performance edition adds adaptive Magnaride suspension that reads road conditions 1,000 times per second.

Charging and Range

The 5 introduces 800V architecture to the Polestar lineup, enabling its 106kWh battery to charge at up to 350kW rates.

The standard version achieves up to 416 miles of range with efficiency rated at 3.53 miles per kWh. The Performance model offers 351 miles of range with consumption of 2.97 miles per kWh.

“Polestar 5 is bringing the future to our present,” said Michael Lohscheller, Polestar CEO. “Our vision for Polestar’s design, technology, and sustainability direction is no longer a dream but a reality our customers can buy.”

Orders for the Polestar 5 are open immediately, with first UK deliveries scheduled for spring 2026.
