Polestar 6 Convertible Delayed Until After Polestar 7 Launch

Polestar 6 Convertible Delayed Until After Polestar 7 Launch image

Polestar’s sleek electric convertible sports car — the Polestar 6 — faces a delay beyond its planned 2026 debut. The Swedish automaker is shifting priorities to launch another SUV model first.

A Polestar spokesperson confirmed to CarExpert that the company’s upcoming Polestar 7 SUV will now take precedence over the convertible. The timeline adjustment reflects Polestar’s focus on higher-volume models and European manufacturing strategy.

Mike Ofiara, speaking for Polestar, outlined the company’s revised product rollout: They’ll first complete the launches of their 3 and 4 SUVs, followed by the Polestar 5 fastback later in 2024. The newly-prioritized Polestar 7 comes next, pushing the sporty Polestar 6 further down the timeline.

The Polestar 6 journey began with the striking O2 concept revealed in March 2022. Despite opening reservations and showcasing the high-performance Concept BST version at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, the convertible’s development is now taking a back seat.

Manufacturing location plays a key role in the decision. The Polestar 7 will be built in Europe, helping the company avoid the substantial tariffs currently affecting their Chinese-built vehicles. It’s also expected to introduce a new vehicle architecture that will underpin future Polestar models — except for the Polestar 6, which will use a modified version of the Polestar 5’s bonded aluminum platform.

Rumors about the Polestar 7 have circulated since 2022, with initial speculation suggesting it might replace the Polestar 2 as the brand’s entry model. However, recent reports indicate the company plans to develop a direct Polestar 2 successor later this decade, likely sharing the 7’s European-built platform.

The delay highlights Polestar’s pragmatic approach to growth — prioritizing mainstream SUV models while keeping their performance aspirations alive for a more opportune moment.
