Polestar CEO Michael Loscheller announced the Swedish EV manufacturer will elevate performance as a core brand pillar alongside design and sustainability. Speaking to journalists at the company’s Gothenburg headquarters, Loscheller outlined plans for more consistent performance offerings across future models.

“We want to focus a bit more on performance, because that is where we can do even better going forward, on track, on acceleration, but also in terms of being superior to others,” Loscheller said.

The automaker hasn’t revealed specific details about its performance strategy, but industry speculation points to the BST nameplate as the likely vehicle for these ambitions.

BST Legacy Points to Performance Future

Short for ‘Beast’, the BST designation first appeared on the limited-run Polestar 2 BST Edition 270 in 2023. That model packed 469 horsepower, enhanced chassis tuning, and an aggressive bodykit with hood striping that clearly distinguished it from standard Polestar 2 variants.

Only 40 units reached the UK market – and they sold out quickly.

Polestar followed up with a BST concept version of its Polestar 6 roadster the following year. The pattern suggests BST could become the brand’s go-to performance sub-brand, similar to how other manufacturers use M, AMG, or RS designations.

Four New Models Coming

The performance focus comes as Polestar launches its largest product expansion ever. The company confirmed four new EVs will join its lineup over the next three years.

The Polestar 5 sedan leads the charge, followed by the compact Polestar 7 SUV. Both models represent new territory for the brand – the 5 as a large luxury sedan and the 7 as Polestar’s entry into the compact crossover segment.

Current models won’t stay static during this expansion.

The aging Polestar 2 – the brand’s oldest model – will receive a complete replacement during this timeframe. More intriguingly, the Polestar 4 coupe-crossover will evolve into an estate variant, giving wagon enthusiasts an electric option in Polestar’s distinctive design language.

Polestar hasn’t disclosed plans for the Polestar 3 full-size SUV, leaving questions about whether it’ll receive updates, a full redesign, or potential discontinuation.

The strategy reflects Polestar’s push to establish itself as more than just Volvo’s electric spin-off. By emphasizing performance alongside its established strengths in Scandinavian design and sustainability, the brand aims to carve out distinct territory in the increasingly crowded premium EV market.
