Renault unveils rugged 4×4 version of its compact EV crossover

Renault has created a more adventure-ready version of its new electric crossover with the Renault 4 Savane concept, set to debut at the Roland-Garros French Open tennis tournament.

The concept revives a name from the original Renault 4 and transforms the modern electric vehicle with true off-road capabilities.

Engineers have raised the suspension 15mm higher than the standard Renault 4 and widened the track by 10mm at both front and rear. The Savane rides on chunky Goodyear UltraGrip Performance+ 225/55 tires mounted on exclusive black 18-inch alloy wheels.

The most significant upgrade is the addition of a second motor on the rear axle, giving the vehicle permanent four-wheel drive. This dual-motor setup is designed to handle mud, snow and challenging off-road conditions.

While Renault hasn’t released specific power figures, the standard Renault 4 offers either 118bhp or 148bhp from its front-mounted motor. This suggests the Savane could potentially deliver close to 300bhp with both motors combined.

The Savane represents the first two-motor application for the Ampere Small platform – the same architecture that underpins the Renault 5 and Alpine A290.

Visually, the concept features a unique Jade Green finish with gloss black wheel arches and bumpers that incorporate new shock-absorbing properties. The black roof includes a distinctive pixel-inspired printed fabric pattern.

Inside, the adventure theme continues with “deep brown” fabric and houndstooth panels on the seats.

Sandeep Bhambra, chief designer for Ampere and Renault, explained: “True to the spirit of exploration of the Renault 4 Savane from the 1960s, the Renault 4 Savane 4×4 Concept show car pushes the adventurous side of the Renault 4 E-Tech electric to the maximum. It adds a chic spirit worthy of ‘gentlemen explorers’ eager for limitless journeys.”

Though Renault hasn’t confirmed production plans, the concept appears nearly road-ready. If produced, the Savane would likely compete with the upcoming Suzuki e Vitara, which will also offer four-wheel drive – an uncommon feature in the compact SUV segment.

The French Open will also showcase Renault’s 5 Turbo 3E hyper-hatch alongside a special Roland-Garros edition of the Renault 5, named in honor of the famous venue. The exhibition runs from May 19 to June 8.
