The Renault 5 claimed the UK Car of the Year 2026 title, adding another win to its growing collection of automotive awards.
The French supermini secured the top honor after already winning the small car category in the same awards program. Two-thirds of the 33-strong judging panel voted for the R5 over three other electric vehicles.
This latest recognition brings the Renault 5’s total award count to 45 major wins. The list includes European Car of the Year, What Car? and Top Gear car of the year titles, plus national car of the year awards in Scotland, Germany and Switzerland.
The Kia EV4 – winner of the Family Car category – finished second in the overall competition. The Skoda Elroq and Alpine A290 tied for third place.
“With its retro styling, the new Renault 5 tugs at the heart strings of those drivers who experienced the original,” said John Challen, co-chairman of the UK Car of the Year Awards and editor of UK Driver magazine.
Challen praised the car’s combination of nostalgic design and modern performance.
“By adding an immensely fun and entertaining drive, desirability and affordability to that nostalgic element, the French favourite pulled off a resounding victory to be crowned UK Car of the Year 2026.”
Adam Wood, managing director of Renault UK, accepted the award on behalf of the company. He highlighted the significance of winning over experienced automotive journalists.
“With so many experienced automotive journalists voting for R5 as the UK Car of the Year, the award is something we’re very proud of,” Wood said.
Strong Sales Performance Expected
Wood pointed to strong early market reception from both retail and fleet customers. The R5 benefits from being one of the few EVs qualifying for the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant.
“It has really hit the spot with retail and fleet customers – and with 2026 being the first full year of sales, plus it being one of the very few EVs to qualify for the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant, R5 is well on its way to being a very common sight on our roads.”
Judges specifically praised the Renault’s “retro cool” styling and engaging driving experience. They declared it “not just a great EV, it’s one of the best cars on sale today” while highlighting its value proposition.
The UK Car of the Year Awards receive sponsorship from Start Rescue. Managing director Lee Puffett congratulated Renault on the win.
“The Renault 5 is a very worthy winner, absolutely full of character, affordable and fun to drive as well,” Puffett said. “We are delighted that our support for The UK Car of the Year Awards has begun with such an outstanding car.”
The award comes as the automotive industry continues its transition to electric vehicles, with the R5 representing Renault’s effort to make EVs more accessible to mainstream buyers.
