Rolls-Royce is launching a permanent Coachbuilt Collection of ultra-luxury cars, with the first models using the company’s electric vehicle platform rather than traditional V12 engines.

The British luxury manufacturer previously built individual coachbuilt models – the one-off Sweptail in 2017, three versions of the £20 million Boat Tail in 2021, and four interpretations of the even pricier Droptail in 2023. All used the company’s V12-powered Architecture of Luxury platform.

Now the Goodwood-based manufacturer is making coachbuilding a regular offering.

Global customer demand for rarer models drove the decision, according to company officials.

A select group of clients with deep connections to Rolls-Royce design will participate in the program. They’ll visit exclusive Private Offices in Dubai, Seoul, Shanghai, New York, and Goodwood for behind-the-scenes access to the entire design and development process.

Electric Platform Choice

The first Coachbuild Collection model will use the 577-horsepower all-wheel-drive electric powertrain from the Spectre rather than a combustion engine.

This choice reflects customer preferences, even as Rolls-Royce steps back from its previous electric-only timeline.

“Many of the collectors who inspired the Coachbuild Collections programme are existing Spectre owners who celebrate how its electric powertrain elevates the Rolls-Royce experience,” the company noted. “For these individuals, the question of how the first Coachbuild Collection should be powered had only one answer.”

Chris Brownridge, chief executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, explained the program’s origins:

“I have met clients around the world who have an extraordinary passion for Rolls-Royce design. It became clear that they wished to see not only what Rolls-Royce would create if left entirely to its own imagination and with the freedom offered by coachbuilding, but they also wanted to witness that journey at every stage.”

Production Details

Each Coachbuilt Collection model will be strictly limited in number and never repeated. Every collection will feature unique exterior and interior designs, hand-built at the Goodwood facility.

The only design constraint will be maintaining the dimensions of the Pantheon grille – ensuring the cars remain recognizably Rolls-Royce.

Like the original coachbuilt Rolls-Royces from decades past, these new models prioritize individual expression over mass production.

The first details about the electric Coachbuilt Collection model will be revealed in April.

The program represents Rolls-Royce’s most exclusive offering yet, targeting collectors who want involvement in creating their vehicles rather than simply purchasing them.
