Turntide Technologies has unveiled the Sierra Echo-S off-roader at the 2025 SEMA show, featuring two UK-designed and built axial flux motors that demonstrate the growing adoption of this technology in performance vehicles.
The 680kg Echo-S is powered by two Turntide AF 140 motors weighing just 42kg each. Paired with one of the UK brand’s Gen 5, Size 9 inverters, the vehicle produces up to 488bhp and 450lb ft of torque.
Advanced Motor Technology
Axial flux motors use a disc-like design that provides high power density in a compact unit. This makes them ideal for smaller vehicles where space is limited – something that’s become increasingly important as manufacturers try to maximize performance while minimizing weight.
Their lightweight nature has seen them adopted by Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, and Koenigsegg in various applications.
The Echo-S represents a collaboration between Turntide, US-based powertrain developer Hypercraft, and Sierra Cars. The development teams believe their use of axial flux motors is “ushering a new era of performance, torque, and efficiency on the off-road vehicle industry.”
Jake Hawksworth, Hypercraft’s CEO, said the technology delivers significant advantages for off-road applications.
Turntide’s axial flux motor delivers huge power in a small, light package that allows us to push the limits of what off-road vehicles can do.
Jason Glass, Sierra’s North America business development director, highlighted the integration challenges that were overcome during development.
Working with Hypercraft to bring this off-road vehicle to life has been an adventure. We worked with them to ensure that the axial flux motor, inverter, and differential function together to provide excellent performance.
Glass added that the company is excited to have customers and media test drive the vehicle early next year.
Pricing and Availability
The Sierra Echo-S is priced from $59,500 USD (around £45,000) and can be ordered directly from the brand’s website. While currently only available in the United States, Sierra is exploring the potential to bring the off-roader to the UK and Europe in 2026.
The Echo-S enters a growing market for electric off-road vehicles. The Vanderhall Brawley GTS debuted in October with a quad-motor setup producing 404bhp.
However, the Brawley GTS is priced $10,000 less than the Sierra Echo-S and offers room for four passengers instead of the Echo-S’s single-seater setup. The Brawley also includes comfort features such as heated seats and air conditioning.
The different approaches highlight how manufacturers are targeting distinct segments within the electric off-road market – from single-seat performance machines to family-oriented adventure vehicles.
