Tesla is recalling 239,382 electric vehicles after discovering their rearview camera displays could stop working, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced.
The recall affects Model 3 and Model S sedans from 2024-2025, along with Model X and Model Y crossovers from 2023-2025. The issue stems from circuit boards that could short out — leaving drivers without the federally required backup camera view when shifting into reverse.
When the problem occurs, drivers see only a blank screen and must rely on mirrors and shoulder checks while backing up. The short circuit happens due to reverse current when starting the vehicle.
Tesla reports that just 2% of these vehicles likely have the defect. The company has received 887 warranty claims and 68 field reports about the issue but says it’s not aware of any crashes, injuries or deaths.
The fix comes in two parts. Tesla released a free software update that owners can download remotely. The company will also inspect vehicles to find damaged circuit boards or ones showing stress — replacing the affected computers at no cost.
Owners will receive notification letters by March 7, 2025. They can contact Tesla customer service at 877-798-3752 with questions, referencing recall number SB-25-00-001.
This latest recall joins a growing list of Tesla safety concerns. The Cybertruck faced seven recalls in its first year. The NHTSA is also investigating 2.6 million Teslas with the Actually Smart Summon feature, which lets owners remotely drive their vehicles.
That investigation follows an October probe into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system, installed on 2.4 million vehicles. The NHTSA launched that investigation after four crashes and one death linked to the technology.
While Tesla often fixes problems through software updates, some issues — like a recent Model S and Model X airbag recall — require physical repairs at service centers.
