Tesla is recalling 294 Model S and Model X vehicles from 2024-2025 due to potentially defective driver’s-side airbags that could tear during deployment, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports.
The safety issue affects vehicles built between Nov. 6 and Nov. 27, 2024. A supplier’s assembly error damaged the airbags, which — combined with a deep fold in the airbag and the windshield heat diffuser’s position — could cause tearing during inflation.
A torn airbag might not protect occupants properly during a crash.
The issue came to light during the supplier’s routine testing procedures. Tesla reports no crashes, injuries, or warranty claims related to this problem.
Unlike many previous Tesla recalls that were fixed through over-the-air software updates, this one requires physical replacement of the airbag assembly at Tesla service centers. The company will perform repairs at no cost to owners.
Tesla will notify affected owners by mail starting Feb. 21. Owners can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 and reference recall number SB-24-20-001.
This latest recall adds to Tesla’s recent hardware-related challenges, including several Cybertruck recalls. While the Cybertruck has seen strong U.S. sales, Tesla’s global deliveries declined in 2024 — marking a shift after years of consistent growth.
