Transport for London announced a new partnership with TotalEnergies to install 43 ultra-rapid charging stations across the capital. The expansion targets public land in key locations to support commercial drivers – particularly taxi operators and delivery services.
The infrastructure rollout includes a mix of 100kW and 200kW charging units. Compatible vehicles can charge from 10% to 80% capacity in approximately 30 minutes.
TfL officials said the new chargers will be positioned near essential road routes, with significant concentration planned for south London boroughs including Bromley, Lewisham and Sutton.
The initiative primarily focuses on high-mileage commercial operators who require frequent, rapid charging capabilities. Local residents will also benefit from increased charging access throughout these areas.
London’s Growing EV Infrastructure Needs
London currently hosts 258,000 registered electric cars and vans. The city maintains roughly one-third of the UK’s total charging infrastructure.
More than 27,980 public chargers operate across London today, including 1,550 rapid or ultra-rapid units.
Projections indicate the capital will need between 43,000 and 51,000 charge points by 2030. This includes an estimated requirement for 3,500 rapid and ultra-rapid charging stations.
The TotalEnergies agreement represents the second contract between the organizations. It’s part of TfL’s broader strategy to accelerate EV infrastructure development across London.
Places for London – TfL’s property division – has separately partnered with Fastned to establish 25 ultra-rapid charging hubs by 2030. TfL has also awarded contracts to Zest for more than 40 additional chargers and plans to invite tenders for the next phase of network locations.
“We’re pleased to be playing our part in expanding the delivery of rapid and ultra-rapid charging bays across the capital,” said David Rowe, director of investment planning at TfL.
“By unlocking our land to bring new EV bays forward, we’re working with both TotalEnergies and Zest to provide the infrastructure that Londoners need to have the confidence to transition to electric vehicles. This will then help clean up London’s air and tackle climate change, meaning that together, we’re helping London to become a greener city for everyone.”
The charging network expansion supports London’s goals to reduce air pollution and meet climate targets through increased electric vehicle adoption.
