Renault has confirmed the all-electric Twingo will be sold in the UK with right-hand-drive configuration.
The French automaker previously announced plans for its next-generation electric city car in 2024, stating it would cost less than €20,000. Until now, Renault hadn’t committed to bringing the compact hatchback to British shores.
CEO Fabrice Cambolive made the announcement to UK media last week.
“I’m pleased to confirm Renault Twingo will launch in the UK,” Cambolive said.
“I put all my attention on the challenge to launch Twingo in right-hand drive, because I believe a car under €20,000 equivalent has huge potential in the UK as well as Europe, both for opening up the segment because of its design, technology and dynamics as with R5 and R4, but also because it brings a new level of versatility for the class that I believe customers will respond to.”
He added: “Accessibility to EVs is critical for the future, and Twingo offers something new for Renault, and for all car buyers.”
Renault is targeting a price below £17,000 for the new Twingo.
The electric city car shares Renault’s Ampere Small platform with the Renault 4, Renault 5, and Alpine A290, but positions itself as a more affordable entry point into EV ownership. While technical specifications remain unconfirmed, the Twingo could inherit the smaller powertrain option from the Renault 5 – a 40kWh battery paired with a 118bhp motor.
Renault claims the Twingo will achieve efficiency of 6.2 miles per kWh during cruising.
At 3.75 meters long – 17cm shorter than the Renault 5 – the Twingo embraces the practicality-focused approach of its predecessor. Despite its compact dimensions, it features five doors and a versatile interior with sliding split-fold rear seats and numerous storage compartments.
If Renault maintains its sub-€20,000 (£16,800) target price, the Twingo will compete directly with the Dacia Spring, Leapmotor T03, and Nissan’s planned Twingo-based model.
While no specific timeline has been announced for UK availability, the left-hand-drive version is scheduled to launch in European markets in 2026.
