Toyota has launched its first all-electric Highlander SUV for the US market. The three-row family hauler delivers up to 320 miles of EPA-estimated range.
The electric Highlander competes directly with the Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90 in the premium electric SUV segment. Toyota offers two trim levels – the entry XLE and top-tier Limited.
Power and Range Options
The base XLE with front-wheel drive uses a 77kWh battery pack. Its single electric motor produces 224 horsepower and 198 lb-ft of torque for 287 miles of range.
All-wheel drive models get a significant power boost. The dual-motor setup jumps to 343 horsepower and 328 lb-ft of torque, though range drops to 270 miles with the same 77kWh battery.
Toyota also offers a larger 95.8kWh battery option on XLE models. This bigger pack comes standard on Limited trim and extends range to the maximum 320 miles while maintaining 343 horsepower output.
Exterior Design
The Highlander EV showcases Toyota’s latest design language. It features the brand’s new “Hammerhead” headlights that debuted last year.
Sharp front styling dominates the look. Semi-flush door handles and pronounced fender lines create a modern appearance that’s more aggressive than the current hybrid model.
The prominent waistline runs the length of the vehicle – emphasizing its SUV proportions while maintaining aerodynamic efficiency.
Interior and Technology
A 14-inch touchscreen anchors the dashboard and supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The driver gets a separate 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
Full-screen navigation comes as an optional upgrade.
The panoramic roof option stands out with customizable lighting. Buyers can choose from 64 different color options for the ambient lighting system.
SofTex vegan leather covers all three seating rows as standard equipment. Heated front seats come included, while second-row heating costs extra.
Ventilated front seats are available as an add-on feature.
Cargo and Practicality
Toyota hasn’t released complete interior dimensions yet. The company did confirm the third row folds completely flat.
Maximum cargo space reaches 1,274 liters with the rear seats down.
The three-row configuration should accommodate seven passengers, though Toyota hasn’t specified exact seating capacity.
Production and Pricing
Toyota will build the Highlander EV at its Georgetown, Kentucky facility. The batteries come from the company’s new North Carolina manufacturing plant.
Pricing remains unannounced. The current hybrid Highlander starts at $48,820, suggesting the EV will likely command a premium.
Deliveries begin later this year following the official launch.
The Highlander EV will only be available in the United States – Toyota hasn’t announced plans for other markets. This strategy aligns with the company’s approach of tailoring electric offerings to specific regional demands.
