Toyota’s adding an all-electric version to its ninth-generation Hilux pickup truck lineup when the redesigned model launches in 2026. The company announced the Hilux BEV will join diesel and hybrid variants, with a hydrogen fuel cell version following in 2028.

The electric Hilux targets fleet customers who need zero-emissions capability without giving up the truck’s reputation for toughness and reliability.

Payload and towing take a hit

Pre-production testing shows the electric version carries a maximum payload of 715kg and can tow up to 1,600kg. That’s significantly less than the diesel model’s 1,000kg payload and 3,500kg towing capacity.

Toyota says the Hilux BEV keeps all the off-road strength of its combustion engine counterparts. It uses the same body-on-frame construction with specific protections for the battery against damage and water. The wading depth matches the internal combustion engine version, though Toyota hasn’t released specific numbers.

A specialized multi-terrain system adjusts throttle, brake and torque control for different off-road conditions. Toyota says it’s equivalent to the L4 range in diesel models.

Power and range details

Two electric motors provide permanent all-wheel drive with a combined 193 horsepower. The front axle generates 151 lb-ft of torque while the rear produces 198 lb-ft.

The 59.2kWh battery pack delivers up to 150 miles of range. Toyota claims best-in-class DC charging speeds to reduce downtime – understood to be 150kW. That’s faster than the 120kW offered by the KGM Musso EV or the 50kW on the Isuzu D-Max EV, though both competitors offer longer official range.

Complete redesign inside and out

The new Hilux gets a major visual overhaul with Land Cruiser-inspired styling. The front end features angular design elements, high-set slim headlights, and the Toyota name spelled out between them. The BEV variant adds a closed-off grille and dedicated aerodynamic alloy wheels.

Only double cab configuration will be available for the ninth-generation model.

The cabin gets twin 12.3-inch screens and what Toyota calls “an all-round elevation in sensory quality.” Safety and driver assistance systems include low-speed acceleration control, proactive driving assist, emergency driving stop system, blind spot monitoring, safe exit assist, and driver awareness monitoring.

UK pricing and availability

The Hilux BEV goes on sale in the UK in June 2026. Toyota hasn’t confirmed pricing, but expect it to start around £60,000 including VAT.

The electric Hilux represents Toyota’s push into zero-emissions commercial vehicles while maintaining the utility that’s made the nameplate popular with fleet operators and commercial users.
