Volvo announced major upgrades for the 2026 EX90 that’ll finally deliver the technology promised at launch – plus much faster charging speeds.

The Swedish automaker is taking the unusual step of replacing the main computer in existing 2025 models to fix ongoing issues with missing features and buggy systems.

The biggest change – Volvo’s swapping the 400-volt electrical system for an 800V architecture. That means you can add 155 miles of range in just 10 minutes with a fast charger.

Charging Gets Much Faster

Volvo hasn’t revealed the new EX90’s peak charging speed yet. The 2025 model maxed out at 250kW and needed 30 minutes to charge from 10-80%.

The new electrical setup also let engineers reduce weight in the battery and motors by using different materials in the powertrain.

The 2026 EX90 adds several features that were supposed to work from day one on the 2025 model:

  • Working Apple CarPlay
  • Curve speed assist
  • Automatic emergency steering that works in the dark

Safety features get expanded too. The upgraded EX90 will warn drivers about slippery roads and hazards ahead. If there’s an emergency, e-call functionality automatically connects the car to Volvo’s emergency call center. Operators can talk with passengers and contact emergency services if needed.

New Computer Powers Everything

All these improvements run on a new dual Nvidia Drive Orin computer that can handle 500 trillion operations per second. That’s enough processing power to support Level 2+ driver assistance features now – and full automation down the road.

Volvo’s offering 2025 EX90 owners a free upgrade to the new computer system. It’s basically an admission that the original computer couldn’t handle what Volvo promised.

Multiple reports have detailed problems with the current EX90. Owners dealt with keycards that rarely worked, infotainment glitches, random error messages, and even throttles sticking at 40mph when merging onto highways.

The EX90 launched two years behind schedule in 2024 as Volvo’s first software-defined vehicle. It’s supposed to represent the brand’s tech-focused future, along with the ES90 sedan and upcoming EX60 SUV.

The computer swap for existing owners shows how seriously Volvo’s taking these issues. Most automakers would just promise software updates – not replace entire computer systems for free.
