Vauxhall has opened orders for the new Frontera Electric Long Range, with prices starting from £27,995 – £4,000 more than the standard range model.

The Long Range gets a battery upgrade from 44kWh to 54kWh. This means it can manage up to 253 miles on a single charge compared with 186 miles for the standard range car.

Both the regular and Long Range Frontera use the same 111bhp front-mounted motor.

Performance and Charging

The larger battery doesn’t bring any increase in charging speeds. Both models peak at 100kW charging, meaning a 20-80% charge takes 28 minutes.

However, the additional weight of the Long Range’s battery sees the 0-62mph time increase slightly from 12.8 seconds to 13 seconds. Top speed increases from 87mph to 88mph – not exactly dramatic differences.

Like the 44kWh Frontera Electric, the Long Range comes in two trim levels. The entry-level Design starts at £27,995, and the range-topping GS starts at £29,895.

Equipment and Features

Standard kit on the Design trim includes 16-inch steel wheels, black skid plates, and body-coloured bumpers.

An optional £400 Design Styling Pack colours the wheels white and adds a matching white roof and roof bars.

Upgrade to the Frontera Electric Long Range GS, and Vauxhall adds:

  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Gloss black door mirrors
  • Silver skid plates
  • Black roof
  • Tinted rear windows
  • LED rear lights

In-car tech on the GS includes electronic climate control, Vauxhall’s comfort-enhancing Intelli-Seats for the driver and passenger, front parking sensors, an electrochromatic rear-view mirror, plus blind-spot monitoring.

Standard Technology

Regardless of trim level, the Frontera Electric Long Range comes with Vauxhall’s ‘Pure Panel’ cockpit. This features two 10-inch widescreen displays for the driver and passenger, built-in satellite navigation, wireless smartphone charging, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

Voice recognition activated by saying ‘Hey Vauxhall’ comes as part of the package – along with LED headlights, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, cruise control, and lane-keep assist.

Unlike most other models in its line-up, Vauxhall isn’t offering the Frontera Electric Long Range in Ultimate trim. Instead, it builds on the already-generous standard equipment list with a £450 ‘Ultimate Pack’. This adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, roof rails, and LED fog lights.

Unlike the Vauxhall Frontera Hybrid, neither the 44kWh nor the 54kWh Frontera Electric are available with seven seats.

Like the Vauxhall Grandland and Astra Electric, the Frontera Electric potentially qualifies for the UK Government’s Electric Car Grant aimed at EVs costing less than £37,000.
