According to Vauxhall, the British brand has launched its first all-wheel-drive electric model with the new Grandland Electric AWD. The company expanded its Grandland Electric lineup with this range-topping variant that adds a second motor for enhanced performance.
The AWD system pairs a smaller rear motor with the existing 210bhp front unit found in other Grandland Electric models. This dual-motor setup delivers a combined 321bhp and 375lb ft of torque.
The extra power makes the Grandland Electric AWD the fastest Vauxhall currently on sale – it’ll hit 62mph from standstill in just 6.1 seconds.
Vauxhall’s using the same two-motor arrangement that powers the new Peugeot E-3008 Dual Motor. This positions the Grandland Electric AWD as a direct competitor to all-wheel-drive versions of the Ford Explorer electric SUV.
Four Driving Modes for Different Conditions
The dual-motor system enables four distinct driving modes, each with different power distribution strategies.
AWD mode runs both motors continuously, evenly splitting the full 321bhp between all four wheels. It uses specialized stability and traction control settings optimized for maximum grip.
Normal mode limits output to 313bhp and 332lb ft, activating the rear motor only when needed. The system automatically switches between front-wheel and all-wheel drive based on driving conditions.
Sport mode keeps both motors running constantly with a 60:40 front-to-rear power split. It also sharpens throttle response and steering feel for more engaging driving.
Eco mode essentially turns the Grandland into a front-wheel-drive vehicle, providing 212bhp from the front motor alone. The rear motor only kicks in when drivers demand maximum acceleration.
Enhanced Ride Quality and Efficiency
Beyond the additional motor, Vauxhall fitted the AWD model with frequency selective dampers – a first for the Grandland range. These dampers automatically adjust to provide better ride quality across different road conditions.
The company also made cosmetic and aerodynamic improvements that actually make the AWD variant the most aerodynamically efficient Grandland model despite the added complexity.
Range remains competitive at 311 miles from the same 73kWh battery used throughout the Grandland Electric lineup. That’s just 11 miles less than the front-wheel-drive version achieves.
The Grandland Electric AWD goes on sale in early autumn, with first customer deliveries expected in late autumn. Vauxhall hasn’t announced pricing yet, but the AWD model will cost more than the current range-topping Grandland Ultimate’s £38,455 starting price.
