Volkswagen Delivers Two Millionth Electric Vehicle

Volkswagen delivered its two millionth electric vehicle to Kirsten Vormbrock from Dresden, Germany. The milestone marks another step forward in the automaker’s electric transformation strategy.

The vehicle was an ID.3 built at Volkswagen’s dedicated EV facility in Zwickau – the company’s “Transparent Factory” that produced 212,000 electric cars in 2025.

Launched in 2020, the ID.3 became VW’s first purpose-built electric car. The compact hatchback faced early production challenges due to software problems and VW’s controversial use of touch-sensitive controls instead of physical buttons.

Despite the rocky launch, the ID.3 became a strong seller across the UK and Europe.

ID.4 SUV Leads Sales Numbers

The ID.3 isn’t Volkswagen’s best-selling electric model, though. That distinction belongs to the ID.4 SUV, which has delivered approximately 901,000 units across Europe, the United States, and China.

Around 628,000 ID.3 vehicles have been delivered since launch.

The ID.5 SUV coupe, meanwhile, was discontinued due to weak consumer demand – showing that even established automakers can miss the mark with electric vehicle styling.

VW’s ID.7 sedan and wagon joined the lineup in 2023. Both versions have performed well, with 132,000 deliveries recorded so far.

Compact EVs Coming in 2026

Volkswagen plans to maintain its position in European EV sales with four new compact models launching in 2026. The ID. Polo will lead this expansion into smaller, more affordable electric cars.

Martin Sander, Volkswagen’s board member for sales, marketing, and after-sales, says these models will target buyers who’ve been priced out of the current EV market.

“These new models make electromobility accessible to even more customers. Our aim is to introduce attractive, affordable electric vehicles for everyday use into the high-volume small car segment and, in so doing, take the next growth steps in our transformation.”

The upcoming compact lineup includes:

  • ID. Polo GTI performance variant
  • ID. Cross crossover model
  • ID. Every1 entry-level option

The current ID.3 is also expected to receive major interior and exterior updates as part of VW’s continued push into mass-market electrification.
