Volkswagen has unveiled the ID.3 Neo, a redesigned version of its electric hatchback that addresses many of the original ID 3’s criticisms with a complete exterior and interior overhaul.

The automaker dropped the troubled ID 3 nameplate in favor of the Neo designation. The updated model represents VW’s first attempt to implement its new “Pure Positive” design language across the ID lineup.

Major Design Changes

The Neo ditches the polarizing one-box styling that defined its predecessor. VW’s design team added a Golf-inspired grille that connects the headlamps through a lightbar centered on an illuminated VW logo.

Gone are the black windscreen pillars, roof sections, and rear panel trim that gave the original ID 3 its distinctive two-tone appearance.

The company offers wheel sizes from 18 to 20 inches. The overall look is more conservative and unified compared to the outgoing model’s controversial styling.

This Pure Positive design philosophy will carry over to upcoming models including the ID Polo and ID Polo Cross.

Interior Overhaul

VW calls the cabin redesign “the biggest jump forward” from the original car. The company eliminated the haptic controls that frustrated many owners.

Physical switches now control the air conditioning. A tactile volume knob replaces touch-sensitive controls for the stereo system.

The new center console includes dual smartphone charging pads, two cupholders, and hidden storage for a 13-inch laptop or tablet.

Digital Golf Tribute

Both the 13-inch landscape touchscreen and 10.25-inch driver display can show a digital version of the original Golf’s instrument cluster. The classic fuel gauge has been reimagined to display battery percentage.

The two-spoke steering wheel features physical buttons for infotainment, driver display, and cruise control functions.

A fabric insert across the upper dashboard provides what VW describes as a more premium feel. Cargo space remains unchanged at 385 liters with rear seats up and 1,267 liters with seats folded.

Battery Options and Performance

The ID.3 Neo maintains rear-wheel drive across three battery configurations using VW’s new lithium-iron phosphate chemistry, which costs less to produce than previous battery technology.

The base 50kWh pack pairs with a 168-horsepower motor for 259 miles of range. A mid-level 58kWh battery works with a 188-hp motor and delivers 307 miles between charges.

The flagship 79kWh version uses a 228-hp motor and achieves up to 391 miles of range.

Faster Charging

Maximum charging speed increases to 183kW with compatible fast chargers. VW says this enables 10% to 80% charging in 29 minutes under optimal conditions.

The automaker confirmed an ID.3 Neo GTI variant will arrive later this year featuring VW’s new AP550 electric motor with significantly more power output.

According to Volkswagen’s official website, pricing details haven’t been announced yet for any Neo variant.

The Neo represents VW’s effort to salvage the ID 3 platform after the original model failed to meet sales expectations despite being one of Europe’s early mass-market electric vehicles.
