Volkswagen has unveiled its ID Cross Concept at the Munich Motor Show – a compact electric SUV that signals the automaker’s push toward more affordable EVs. The concept previews a production model set to arrive in 2026 with an expected starting price around £25,000.
The ID Cross will slot between the Polo and ID.3 in Volkswagen’s lineup as part of what the company calls its “entry-level campaign.”
Shared Platform Strategy
The concept shares its foundation with the Skoda Epiq, also revealed at Munich. Both vehicles are part of Volkswagen Group’s Electric Urban Car Family (EUCF) and will be manufactured in Spain.
At 4.1 meters long, the ID Cross targets urban drivers who need flexibility for longer family trips. Volkswagen says it’ll seat five passengers with a 450-liter boot and 25-liter frunk.
Andreas Mindt, VW’s head of design, described the concept’s boxy styling as “clean and likeable” – a look that’ll define future Volkswagen models.
“The lines and powerful surfaces on the ID. Cross Concept are pure and clear. They shape an SUV that is a trend setter not a trend follower and one that transfers the brand’s identity into the future.”
The design borrows C-pillar stripes from the ID Buzz, which themselves reference the air intakes on the original Type 2 van.
Interior Focus on Sustainability
Inside, the concept emphasizes sustainable materials in the fabric seats and dashboard. The design centers around VW’s familiar 13-inch touchscreen – but crucially includes physical buttons below the screen and on the steering wheel.
The concept features pre-configured “atmospheres” that adjust lighting, sound and climate settings. Fully reclining seats create a bed-like configuration, though that feature’s production chances remain unclear.
Real plants in the center console definitely won’t make it to showrooms.
Technical Specifications
The ID Cross uses Volkswagen’s MEB Small architecture with a front-mounted motor producing 208 horsepower. Two battery options are planned:
- 36kWh battery pack
- 58kWh battery pack
Volkswagen claims the larger battery delivers 261 miles of range on a single charge.
The production ID Cross will compete directly with other compact electric SUVs when it reaches dealers in 2026, representing Volkswagen’s effort to bring EV technology to more price-conscious buyers.
