Volvo’s new ES90 EV sedan boasts a 435-mile range and can add 186 miles of charge in just 10 minutes.
The ES90 features an all-new 800V electrical architecture with lighter electric motors, upgraded battery cells, a new inverter, and improved climate and thermal systems.
This combination allows the Swedish carmaker’s latest EV to travel further and charge faster than any previous Volvo electric vehicle. The ES90 will outperform the Mercedes EQS 450 4Matic by 15 miles — one of the UK’s current range leaders.
Each ES90 battery comes with Volvo’s blockchain-based “battery passport” that tracks the sourcing of lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite used in production.
Volvo has incorporated 29% recycled aluminum and 18% recycled steel in the ES90’s construction to reduce CO2 emissions. The interior features FSC-certified wood panels, while 16% of polymers and bio-based materials are recycled.
Built on parent company Geely’s electric-only SPA2 platform, the ES90 shares its underpinnings with the larger EX90 and Polestar 3 SUVs.
The ES90 comes in two trim levels — Plus and Ultra — with three powertrain options:
- Entry-level Single Motor: 92kWh battery, 404-mile range, 328bhp, 354lb ft torque, 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds
- Mid-tier Twin Motor: 106kWh battery, 435-mile range, 442bhp, 494lb ft torque, 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds
- Flagship Twin Motor Performance: 671bhp, 642lb ft torque, 0-62mph in 4 seconds, 435-mile range
All ES90 variants have a top speed of 112mph.
Volvo describes the ES90 as “fully in a class of its own,” combining “the refined elegance of a sedan, the adaptability of a fastback, and the spacious interior and higher ground clearance of an SUV.” The design resembles the Polestar 4 from side and rear angles, though the ES90 includes a rear window.
The front features Volvo’s signature “Thor’s Hammer” headlights in a contemporary, pixelated version. A blanked-out front end mirrors the styling of Volvo’s other dedicated EVs — the smaller EX30 crossover and larger EX90. Unlike the EX90, the visible LiDAR stack on the roof will be fully operational from launch.
Inside, the ES90 shares the EX90’s minimalist aesthetic with a nine-inch driver’s information cluster and 14.5-inch central display. One difference is the ES90’s roller switch replacing the EX90’s rotary volume control.
Volvo calls the ES90 a “software-defined car” that will “continuously evolve and improve through core computing technology, constant connectivity and data.” With dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin autonomous vehicle development platforms, the ES90 will be Volvo’s most powerful vehicle ever — capable of 508 trillion operations per second.
Boot space measures 424 litres with the rear seats up, expanding to 1,256 litres when folded down.
Order books for the Volvo ES90 open in spring 2025, with prices starting at £69,650 — positioning it as a direct competitor to the BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE. Top-spec models will cost around £88,000.
Production begins in late summer at one of Volvo’s Chinese factories, with UK deliveries expected in early 2026.
