Volvo will add its Plug & Charge system to the EC30, EX30, and EX40 electric vehicles this year, expanding beyond the EX90 SUV where it debuted.
The system eliminates the need for payment cards at charging stations. When a driver connects their vehicle to a compatible charger, the station automatically identifies the car and processes payment.
“With Plug & Charge, you just drive up to a compatible charging station, hop out, plug in and go about your day,” said Erik Severinson, Volvo’s chief product and strategy officer. “When you’re back, it’s the same approach, as everything has already been sorted by the system.”
Drivers can locate compatible charging stations through Google Maps on their vehicle’s display or the Volvo Cars app. The system requires one-time setup and activation through the vehicle.
The Plug & Charge rollout comes as Volvo prepares to upgrade its infotainment system. By late 2025, approximately 2.5 million vehicles worldwide will receive the ultra-fast Qualcomm Snapdragon-based system.
The new interface — called Volvo Car UX — currently runs on the EX30, EX90, and XC90. The upgrade will extend to XC40, EX40, EC40, V60 and V90 models manufactured since 2020.
Key features include:
- Frequently used apps on the home screen
- Context-aware information bar that updates based on driving conditions
- Enhanced navigation display behind the steering wheel
The system adapts its interface to show relevant information based on the vehicle’s surroundings and driving situation.
