Volvo has announced its upcoming all-electric EX60 will deliver a best-in-class range of 503 miles when it debuts on January 21. The Swedish automaker says the SUV will compete directly with the new BMW iX3 and Mercedes GLC.
The EX60 runs on Volvo’s latest 800-volt SPA3 electrical architecture. This system allows the vehicle to add 200 miles of range in just 10 minutes when connected to a 400kW rapid charger.
Manufacturing and Design
Volvo will manufacture the EX60 using a mega casting system. This process replaces hundreds of smaller parts with a single, high-precision casting – reducing overall weight and extending range.
The battery integrates directly into the vehicle’s body structure. This design further cuts weight and improves efficiency, alongside Volvo’s in-house developed electric motors.
Volvo’s Breathe Battery Technologies manages the battery’s performance through dedicated algorithms. The system adjusts how the battery handles power to keep it operating optimally regardless of weather conditions.
The 503-mile range applies specifically to the all-wheel drive variant. That figure makes it the longest-range electric Volvo to date.
Range Comparison
The recently released ES90 saloon offers 435 miles on a single charge. The updated EX90 SUV provides 380 miles of range.
Volvo’s smaller EVs deliver shorter ranges – the EX30 reaches 296 miles while the EX40 manages 355 miles.
Volvo chief technology officer Andreas Bell called the EX60 a “game-changer” ahead of its debut.
“The EX60 is designed to be a game-changer. With our new electric vehicle architecture, we directly address the main worries that customers have when considering a switch to a fully electric car. The result is class-leading range and fast charging speeds, marking the end of range anxiety.”
Pricing for the EX60 hasn’t been announced yet. The company expects it to cost roughly the same as the current XC60 hybrid, which starts at £56,760.
