Volvo will unveil its all-electric EX60 SUV during a livestream event in Stockholm on January 21. The Swedish automaker plans to begin production at its Torslanda plant in Gothenburg during the first half of 2026.

The mid-sized EV will slot between the EX30 crossover and the full-size EX90 SUV in Volvo’s lineup.

Range and Technical Specifications

According to Volvo, the EX60 will deliver the longest WLTP range of any Volvo EV to date. The current record holder is the ES90 sedan, which achieves 435 miles from its 106kWh battery pack.

The EX60’s range advantage comes from Volvo’s new SPA3 architecture – an EV-only platform that replaces the current SPA2 system. While SPA2 was developed by Chinese automotive giant Geely, Volvo’s parent company, SPA3 was created exclusively by Volvo’s engineering team.

SPA3 is scalable for vehicles in the B to F segments. This means the platform can accommodate different battery sizes and vehicle dimensions as needed.

Advanced Software and Design

Like the ES90 and EX90, the EX60 will feature an advanced software stack that supports over-the-air updates and additional features.

Throughout 2024, Volvo has released teaser images showing the EX60’s design direction. The latest visuals confirm it’ll maintain roughly the same proportions as the XC60 it replaces while incorporating Volvo’s signature ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlight design seen on the EX30 and EX90.

The vertical brake lights reference classic Volvo models like the 850 and V70.

Manufacturing Innovation

The EX60 will be the first Volvo to use megacasting technology. This production method allows large sections of the vehicle to be manufactured as single units rather than assembling multiple components.

Megacasting reduces weight and speeds up production. Tesla, Nio, Xpeng, and Ford already use this technology.

For the EX60, Volvo will megacast the rear floor section.

Pricing hasn’t been announced yet. Industry analysts expect the EX60 to cost more than the Tesla Model Y and compete with vehicles like the Porsche Macan Electric and the upcoming Mercedes GLC.
