Volvo has confirmed that its all-electric EX60 SUV will arrive in January next year, marking a significant milestone for the Swedish manufacturer.

The company has released only teaser images on social media so far. The family-sized SUV is expected to match the dimensions of Volvo’s best-selling XC60 while drawing design cues from the smaller EX30 crossover and larger EX90 SUV.

Design elements will likely include an angular appearance with updated versions of Volvo’s ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights – a signature feature the brand has used since the mid-2010s. The EX60 will also feature a closed-off grille, typical of electric vehicles.

New Platform Technology

The EX60 represents a major step forward as the first Volvo built on the brand’s EV-only SPA3 platform.

This platform succeeds the current SPA architecture that underpins the EX90. Unlike previous platforms, SPA3 was developed entirely by Volvo rather than being shared with other brands under parent company Geely.

SPA3’s modular design allows Volvo to reduce manufacturing costs by using the same electronic architecture and software across different vehicle sizes. This approach eliminates duplicated work across the model lineup – similar to Tesla’s production philosophy.

Megacasting Manufacturing

The EX60 will be Volvo’s first vehicle built using megacasting technology.

This manufacturing method creates entire vehicle sections as single units instead of assembling multiple parts. Tesla pioneered this approach, and Chinese manufacturers including Xpeng, Nio, and Zeekr have also adopted it.

The megacasted rear floor weighs 15-20% less than traditional stamped equivalents while providing better safety and durability.

Production efficiency improves dramatically – a megacasted floor takes 120 seconds to build compared to a full hour for multi-stamped pieces.

Market Competition

When it launches, the EX60 will compete directly with the Porsche Macan Electric, Audi Q6 e-tron, and the next-generation BMW iX3.

By January 2026, Volvo’s European EV lineup will include six models: the EX30, EC40, EX40, EX60, ES90, and EX90. The company also offers the EM90 MPV in the Chinese market.

The XC60 that the EX60 will eventually replace has been Volvo’s best-selling model since its 2008 introduction, making this transition particularly important for the brand’s electric future.
