Volvo announced the return of its XC70 nameplate as a range-extender plug-in hybrid that will deliver more than 100 miles of electric-only range.

The new XC70 will launch first in China later this year, where range-extender hybrids have gained significant market traction. Volvo is already considering expanding availability to other global markets.

The plug-in hybrid will provide 200km (124 miles) of all-electric driving under China’s CLTC testing standards. This range allows for zero-emission daily driving while maintaining the flexibility of a combustion engine for longer journeys.

Volvo hasn’t specified whether the XC70 will function as a true range-extender – where the petrol engine only generates electricity – or as a conventional plug-in hybrid where the engine also powers the wheels directly.

“The XC70 marks our strategic entry into the extended-range plug-in hybrid segment, a perfect bridge to full electrification,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. “It enables us to maintain and develop a balanced product portfolio, while offering a highly attractive alternative to customers who are not yet ready for fully electric cars.”

Samuelsson noted the model represents Volvo’s strategy of regionalizing its lineup to meet specific market needs.

Extended range plug-in hybrids (EREVs) continue gaining popularity in China despite the country’s strong battery-electric vehicle market. Other manufacturers including Lotus – owned by Volvo parent company Geely – and Volkswagen have recently announced similar EREV models for China.

Teaser images of the XC70 show an SUV silhouette similar to the XC60 and XC90 models. The front features a closed grille resembling Volvo’s all-electric vehicles, complete with the brand’s signature Thor’s hammer headlights with adaptive technology. Distinctive C-shaped taillights integrate into the tailgate glass.

Volvo describes the new XC70 as reflecting the capabilities of the original all-wheel-drive estate – “a versatile family car, ready for all kinds of adventures.”
