Volkswagen Group announced a global recall of nearly 100,000 electric vehicles due to defective battery modules that could limit driving range or create fire hazards.

The recall affects 94,031 VW Group EVs worldwide. This includes 74,579 ID-branded electric models and 19,452 units of the Cupra Born hot hatchback.

According to the KBA, Germany’s motor and road traffic authority, 22,182 Volkswagen models and 5,976 Cupra vehicles are affected in Germany alone.

Affected Models and Production Dates

The recall covers ID 3 hatchbacks, ID 4 SUVs, ID 5 coupe variants, and ID Buzz Cargo models manufactured between June 24, 2023, and August 23, 2024.

Cupra Born models built between February 27, 2022 and April 21, 2024 are also included.

VW will inspect the faulty battery components and install software updates to address the issue. The company plans to replace individual high-voltage modules when necessary.

Owners can find additional details on the KBA website using reference code 16271R.

Previous Recall Issues

This isn’t Volkswagen’s first EV recall.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recalled 43,881 ID 4 models in January 2024. Those vehicles – built between 2023 and 2025 – faced similar overheating battery concerns and fire risks.

VW’s solution involved the same approach: software updates and module replacements when needed.

Impact on VW’s Electric Future

The recall marks another setback for Volkswagen’s first-generation ID electric lineup, which launched in September 2023.

Early ID models faced widespread software glitches and functionality problems that damaged VW’s reputation for reliability. The ID 3, ID 4, and ID 5 struggled with user interface issues and system crashes.

VW has worked to rebuild confidence with the ID 7 sedan launch. The company plans a complete second-generation ID lineup starting with the ID Polo this spring.

Future models will include the ID Cross, ID 1 city car, a redesigned ID 3, and an all-electric Golf replacement scheduled for 2028. Each promises physical controls and improved build quality over current ID vehicles.

EV Powered contacted Volkswagen Group UK about potential recalls affecting British customers. We’ll update this story with their response.
