Volkswagen is bringing back its Fire & Ice nameplate for the electric age with the all-electric ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice. The limited-edition model pays tribute to the cult 1990 Golf Mk2 Fire & Ice that was co-developed with German luxury clothing brand Bogner.
The VW ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice goes on sale in the UK from August 7 with a starting price of £48,360.
Just like the original, this electric version features ultra-violet metallic paint. VW has added the period Fire & Ice logo on the roof spoiler as a nod to its predecessor. The company first showed a concept version at the 2023 annual ID. meeting in Locarno, Switzerland.
Modern Fire & Ice Design
VW has updated the Fire & Ice theme for today’s market. The ID.3 GTX gets a geometric F+I pattern on the C-pillar and striking 20-inch Locarno alloy wheels in two-tone purple and silver. Red anodized roof strips complete the exterior look.
The puddle lights tell their own story – the passenger side shows a flame logo for fire, while the driver’s side displays a snowflake for ice.
VW has also tinted the LED tail lights exclusively for this model.
Inside, the Fire & Ice theme continues with contrasting headrests. The passenger headrest is blue while the driver’s is orange. Both seats feature styling inspired by Bogner padded jackets. The steering wheel, instrument panel, door trims and mats all get colored stitching and logos.
GTX Performance Unchanged
Despite the visual changes, the ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice keeps the same powertrain as the standard GTX model.
The rear-mounted motor delivers 322bhp and 402 lb-ft of torque. It’ll hit 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds. The 79kWh battery provides 367 miles of range and accepts up to 185kW DC charging – that’s 10 to 80 percent charge in around 26 minutes.
The GTX chassis setup includes uprated stabilizers and adaptive chassis control compared to regular ID.3 models.
VW will build exactly 1,990 units to reflect the production year of the original Golf Fire & Ice.
“The response to last year’s show car was overwhelming,” said VW marketing and aftersales board member Martin Sander. “Many Volkswagen fans expressed a strong desire to see this car enter series production, and we were only too happy to make that wish a reality.”
He added that the ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice demonstrates the appeal of VW’s premium sports model while carrying a piece of Volkswagen history into the electric future.
“The revival of the cooperation between Volkswagen and BOGNER FIRE+ICE after more than 30 years, and the realization of a series production model, is a major milestone for us,” said Bogner managing director Daniel Hiendlmeier.
“What started as a show car has become a market-ready vehicle that will excite both fans of the iconic Golf Mk2 Fire and Ice and a new generation.”
The VW ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice won’t be eligible for Volkswagen’s newly-announced £1,500 EV discount when it goes on sale.
