VW insiders confirmed to Autocar that the company’s planning to discontinue ID.5 production at the end of 2026. The coupe-SUV could be gone for the 2027 model year.

The ID.5 hasn’t clicked with buyers since its 2021 launch as the sleeker cousin to the ID.4.

Poor sales performance sealed the model’s fate. While the ID.3, ID.4, and ID.7 rank among Europe’s best-selling EVs, the ID.5 failed to gain traction with customers.

The discontinuation frees up production capacity for VW’s aggressive EV expansion. CEO Thomas Schäfer announced earlier this year that the brand targets 70% EV sales in Europe by 2030.

New Models Coming

The Wolfsburg-based automaker’s already confirmed several electric replacements are coming.

The ID.2 – an electrified Polo replacement – arrives in 2026. The T-Cross replacement, called the ID.2X crossover, debuts at Munich’s motor show this September.

An ID.2 GTI launches at the end of next year.

VW’s also rumored to be developing an ID.2 Clubsport GTI and ID.2 R. The R variant could feature in-wheel motor technology from Rimac.

The ID.Every1 replaces the discontinued e-Up! when it hits markets in 2027. By 2029, the Mk9 Golf’s expected to go fully electric.

Volkswagen declined to comment when EV Powered reached out about the ID.5 discontinuation rumors. A company spokesperson called it “speculation” about future product plans.

The sister ID.4 continues performing well with European EV buyers – highlighting how even small design changes can dramatically impact sales in the competitive electric vehicle market.
