Volkswagen revealed the interior of its upcoming ID Polo, bringing back physical buttons after customers complained about the touch-sensitive controls in current ID models.

The ID Polo launches later this year with a cabin designed under Andreas Mindt’s direction. He promised to restore physical switches after negative feedback about the ergonomics of VW’s current electric car lineup.

When VW’s ID range debuted in 2020, drivers criticized the cabins for malfunctioning haptic controls and glitchy technology. The complaints also targeted VW’s departure from its traditional build quality.

Physical Controls Return

VW scrapped the problematic haptic slider that controlled climate settings and hazard lights. The new ID Polo places physical buttons for these functions below a 13-inch central touchscreen.

A rotary dial now handles volume control and lets drivers change tracks or radio stations.

The redesigned steering wheel features a squared-off, two-spoke design with physical switches instead of touch sensors. Left-side controls manage driver assistance features – right-side switches handle infotainment and display settings.

Retro Display Options

Both the main touchscreen and 10.25-inch driver display offer a retro mode. The vintage-style graphics include analog dials, an odometer, charge level indicator, and spooling tape deck animations inspired by the original Golf.

VW aims to create “an interior that feels like a friend from the very first contact,” according to company statements.

The automaker addressed previous infotainment problems by updating its software and integrating Google’s built-in system. Renault, Nissan, and Polestar use the same Google platform, which has received positive reviews.

New Design Language

VW adopted a “Pure Positive” design philosophy for the small EV’s interior. The approach aims to restore the premium fit and finish that defined VW cars for decades.

Dashboard and door insert materials use thermoplastic made from recycled plastic bottles.

The ID Polo will compete directly with the upcoming Renault 5 electric car.

Pricing starts around £22,000 when sales begin. VW offers two battery options – a 38kWh pack and a larger 56kWh unit.

The bigger battery provides 280 miles of range and supports rapid charging up to 125kW.
