Rivian will open order books for its mid-sized R2 crossover on June 9, promising rapid delivery for early customers.
The all-electric Rivian R2 joins the full-sized R1S SUV and R1T pickup in the American EV startup’s passenger lineup. The first Premium models start just under $60,000 – roughly £45,000.
Customers invited to order on launch day will receive their R2 within two to six weeks.
A more affordable Standard version priced at $48,490 (£36,000) becomes available in 2027. An even cheaper $45,000 (£33,000) variant arrives toward the end of next year.
Range and Performance Specs
The R2’s 87.9kWh battery delivers 345 miles of range in rear-wheel-drive configuration, or 330 miles with all-wheel-drive. These figures come from EPA testing, which typically shows lower numbers than Europe’s WLTP system.
Rivian plans to introduce a smaller battery option later.
The R2 marks Rivian’s first vehicle sold outside North America. It launches in mainland Europe next year, with UK availability scheduled for 2028. European pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Competition includes the Tesla Model Y, Kia EV5 and EV6, Polestar 4, Xpeng G6, and Skoda Enyaq.
Company Background
R.J. Scaringe founded Rivian in 2009. The company’s first vehicle was the R1T – the world’s first electric pickup truck – which launched in 2021.
In March 2025, Volkswagen invested $5.8 billion in Rivian to access its technologies, including the company’s skateboard chassis platform.
Future models include the compact R3 SUV and its more powerful tri-motor R3X sibling. This entry-level vehicle is expected in 2028 and will be built at Rivian’s new factory in Stanton Springs North, Georgia.
