Freelander confirmed its new standalone brand will launch the Freelander 8 in the UK during the second half of 2027, following the vehicle’s debut at Auto Beijing 2026.

The brand operates independently from Land Rover despite shared heritage. Chery and JLR developed the vehicle through their joint venture, with Chery handling engineering and production in China.

The Freelander 8 marks a significant departure from the original compact SUV format.

Size and Platform Details

At 5.1 metres long, the Freelander 8 stretches 350mm beyond a Defender 110 without its spare wheel. The extended dimensions accommodate up to six passengers across multiple seating configurations.

Chery’s iMax platform provides the foundation – a flexible architecture that supports multiple powertrains and drivetrain configurations. Centre and rear-locking differentials come standard, with air suspension likely available as an option.

Three powertrain options will reach UK markets: full electric, plug-in hybrid, and range extender variants.

The PHEV system combines Chery’s 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with dual electric motors. Range figures for all powertrains remain unconfirmed.

Design Language

Land Rover’s UK design team shaped the Freelander 8’s exterior, drawing inspiration from the Concept 97 for its angular, futuristic profile.

Chinese market vehicles feature headlights with integrated small screens that function as daytime running lights and communication displays for other road users. European regulations will likely prevent these features from reaching UK models.

The door design extends upward and over the body structure – an unusual approach that creates distinctive proportions. Split rear-quarter windows reference the original 1997 Freelander’s design language.

High-gloss black finishes accent the wheel arches and rear roof section across all variants.

Eight exterior colours include two matte options alongside vibrant choices like lime green and bright purple.

Interior Technology

Land Rover’s design team also handled the cabin layout, which emphasizes screen integration typical of Chinese market vehicles. A full-width display spans the entire dashboard length, while a separate vertical touchscreen occupies the centre console.

Chery’s software system powers both displays through locally-developed digital interfaces. Physical controls below the central screen provide backup operation – uncommon among Chinese manufacturers who typically rely on touch-only interfaces.

Captain’s chairs outfit the second row as standard equipment. An optional roof-mounted screen serves rear passengers, complemented by configurable ambient lighting throughout the cabin.

Six interior colour schemes range from traditional black, brown, and beige to more distinctive purple options. Each colour package includes unique materials and trim elements.

Market Position

Chery positions Freelander as a premium SUV brand with dedicated dealership networks separate from existing JLR or Chery operations.

UK pricing remains undisclosed as the brand finalizes market positioning ahead of the 2027 launch window. The company hasn’t indicated whether pricing will compete directly with Land Rover’s current lineup or target different market segments entirely.

The joint venture structure allows Freelander to leverage both companies’ strengths – Chery’s manufacturing efficiency and electrification expertise combined with Land Rover’s design heritage and premium market experience.
