BMW has unveiled a refreshed version of its flagship i7 electric sedan, featuring updated styling, enhanced technology, and up to 452 miles of range. The luxury EV now delivers nearly 690 horsepower in its top M70 variant.
The mid-cycle update targets competitors like the Mercedes EQS and the upcoming Jaguar Type 00. BMW’s design team refined the i7’s signature illuminated kidney grille and added thinner daytime running lights for a more refined appearance.
Design Updates
The front fascia features a reprofiled version of the massive kidney grille that dominated the original i7’s design. New thin daytime running lights create a cleaner look compared to the outgoing model.
BMW offers crystal glass daytime running lights as an option. These provide a startup animation when the vehicle is activated.
The headlight units have been repositioned into recessed areas within the air dams. This design choice makes them nearly invisible when not in use.
Rear styling takes inspiration from BMW’s new i3, with tail lights that extend across the center of the trunk. The BMW logo sits between the light elements.
The automaker describes the overall aesthetic as “monolithic.” New paint options include two-tone and dual-surface finishes that combine matte and metallic elements. Buyers can add a hand-drawn coach line to separate the contrasting surfaces.
Interior Technology
BMW completely redesigned the cabin to align with its new Neue Klasse EV architecture. This platform will underpin the upcoming i3 and iX3 models.
A 17.9-inch driver display and 14.6-inch central touchscreen dominate the dashboard layout. A panoramic vision display stretches nearly the full width of the cabin from pillar to pillar.
The panoramic display can be customized with various widgets based on driver preferences. This feature matches the interface found in BMW’s other new EVs.
Luxury materials include leather, metal, wood, glass, and crystal elements throughout the interior. Rear passengers can opt for a 31.3-inch 8K theater screen paired with a 35-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.
Executive Lounge seats offer leg rests, heated armrests, and an Alcantara-trimmed phone tray. The Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof incorporates 40 LEDs that provide various light displays and color options.
Performance and Range
BMW offers two all-wheel-drive variants: the i7 60 xDrive and the performance-oriented M70.
The updated i7 uses Gen6 battery cells developed and manufactured by Rimac in Croatia. These cells provide 20% higher energy density than BMW’s previous prismatic cells while reducing the vehicle’s carbon footprint.
Maximum charging speed remains 250kW, enabling 10%-80% charging in 28 minutes. The electrical architecture carries over from the previous generation.
The i7 50 delivers the longest range at 452 miles on a single charge – an improvement of 65 miles over the outgoing model.
The M70 variant produces 689 horsepower and nearly 750 lb-ft of torque. It accelerates from 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds but sacrifices some efficiency for performance, achieving 426 miles of range.
BMW hasn’t announced pricing for the refreshed i7, though it’s expected to reach well into six figures. Order books open May 28, with first deliveries scheduled for November.
The updates position BMW’s flagship EV to better compete in the luxury electric sedan segment as more automakers enter the space.
