Smart released design sketches and images of its Concept #2 just days before the vehicle’s debut at Auto Beijing 2026 on April 22.
The Chinese-German automaker describes the Concept #2 as an all-electric reimagining of the Smart Fortwo city car that first launched in 1998. Smart says the concept “interprets smart design through a style-inspired lens, where function becomes form.”
Based on the teaser images, the Concept #2 maintains the Fortwo’s distinctive one-box design and ultra-compact size. The concept appears to measure under three meters in overall length – similar to its 2.7-meter predecessor.
The Concept #2 rides on Smart’s Electric Compact Architecture platform.
The vehicle uses a rear-wheel-drive setup with a two-door, two-seat configuration that mirrors the original Fortwo layout.
Mercedes Design Team Leads Styling
Mercedes-Benz’s design team handled both interior and exterior styling for the Concept #2. The designers focused on “modernist minimalism and premium fashion influences” throughout the vehicle.
The exterior features a two-tone matte white and gold color scheme. Buckles and fine leather applications complement the paint finish.
Gold detailing appears on the A-pillar, windscreen surround, multi-spoke alloy wheels, and badging areas.
Smart developed the Concept #2 specifically for European cities and consumers. However, Chinese automotive giant Geely will manufacture the production version – called the Smart #2 – in China. Geely serves as Mercedes’s partner in the Smart joint venture.
Smart plans to debut the production #2 model later this year.
Double Launch at Auto Beijing
Auto Beijing 2026 will feature two Smart debuts. The automaker will introduce both the Concept #2 and the Smart #6 plug-in hybrid at the show.
The Smart #6 represents the brand’s first premium fastback model. It’s designed to compete with vehicles like the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class.
The #6 EHD offers up to 177 miles of electric-only driving range.
Combined range reaches 1,125 miles on China’s CLTC testing cycle. The vehicle uses Geely’s EM-i 2.0 platform and the company’s NordThor hybrid system.
Mercedes’s design team also styled the #6 EHD. Smart will sell the #6 EHD exclusively in China for now – with no announced plans for other markets.
The Beijing show marks Smart’s continued expansion beyond its traditional city car roots into larger vehicle segments.
