Volkswagen has fully revealed its new ID.Polo electric supermini, promising up to 280 miles of range and a return to the user-friendly approach that made the original Polo popular.

The ID.Polo represents a significant shift for the German automaker’s electric strategy. VW’s bringing back familiar names and designs while simplifying the interior experience that frustrated many ID.3 owners.

The electric supermini will compete directly with the Renault 5, Mini Electric and Peugeot E-208 when it goes on sale later this year. VW hasn’t announced UK pricing yet, but the company confirmed the ID.Polo will start under €25,000 in Germany.

Fresh Design Philosophy

Built on VW’s new MEB+ platform, the ID.Polo debuts the brand’s “Pure Positive” design language. The approach draws inspiration from iconic VW models to create what designers call a more likeable and confident look.

The ID.Polo shares clear DNA with its petrol predecessor but adopts softer, more rounded styling. VW says this creates an elegant and friendly appearance that bridges the gap between old and new.

Clean lines and smooth surfaces echo classic models like the Mk1 Golf, which inspired the C-pillar design.

The front features curved LED lights and air curtains designed to resemble dimples in a smiling face. At the rear, a full-width light bar and large glass area emphasize the car’s width and presence.

Despite being 2cm shorter than the petrol Polo, the electric version offers 5cm more wheelbase thanks to its dedicated EV platform. This translates to significantly more interior space and an impressive 441-liter boot.

Interior Overhaul

Andreas Mindt, the ID.Polo’s chief designer, focused on creating an interior that “feels like a friend” – a direct response to criticism of the ID.3’s original cabin.

Physical buttons make a major comeback throughout the ID.Polo. Climate controls sit in a simple bank below the 13-inch touchscreen, while proper switches return to the steering wheel.

The cabin emphasizes familiarity and intuitive operation alongside modern technology.

A 10-inch digital instrument cluster can display graphics inspired by early Golf models. VW’s ID.Light system now extends into the door tops for the first time, creating ambient lighting throughout the cabin.

Four Powertrain Options

Volkswagen plans four different powertrains for the ID.Polo, including a hot GTI variant sharing underpinnings with the new Cupra Raval.

The entry-level model uses a newly designed 114bhp motor with a 37kWh LFP battery. VW estimates up to 204 miles of range with 90kW charging capability – meaning 10-80% charging in 27 minutes. A 133bhp variant uses the same battery setup.

Higher-spec models get a 52kWh NMC battery paired with a 208bhp motor for up to 283 miles of range.

The larger battery supports 105kW charging, reducing the 10-80% charging time to 24 minutes.

The ID.Polo GTI arrives later this year with the 52kWh battery and an upgraded 223bhp front motor. It’ll feature bespoke chassis tuning and steering hardware for enhanced driving dynamics.

Trim Levels and Equipment

UK specifications aren’t confirmed yet, but VW wants the ID.Polo to deliver “efficiency for all.” German pricing starts at €24,995 for the entry Trend model, while sister car Cupra Raval begins at £23,785.

The lineup follows VW’s standard ID structure: Trend, Life, and Style grades, with the GTI topping the range.

All models include LED headlights with auto-dipping, the digital cockpit setup, automatic air conditioning, and vehicle-to-load capability. Advanced driver assistance features like side assist and lane keeping come standard across the range.

Life specification adds adaptive cruise control, reversing camera, front parking sensors, and smartphone mirroring.

Style grade brings Matrix headlights, 3D tail lights, and illuminated VW badges front and rear. The top trim also includes heated sports seats, heated steering wheel, and dual-zone climate control.

Available options include a 10-speaker Harman Kardon system, panoramic sunroof, massage seats, and Connected Travel Assist with traffic light recognition.

VW hasn’t confirmed a UK launch date, but German pre-orders open in the coming days. This suggests UK availability in the third quarter of 2026.
